The automotive industry in Poland is growing at a surprisingly rapid pace and gives you the ability to work not only engineers. Regardless of the chosen specialization worth so you get to know the automotive sector. Having your own career path, current trends, as well as about the prospects of work and career development at TRW says Managing Director Emil Słaboń two production plants employing more than 1,300 employees in Bielsko-Biala and Czechowice.
How did you come to TRW?
During the fifth year of study started an internship at another company with the automotive industry. TRW learned about the announcement that the company posted on my college. I decided to apply for the newly launched internship program, little knowing more about the organization. That’s what I remember from the very beginning, this sense that the company is rapidly developing, and the internship program was supposed to be part of the planned development.
How was the first contact with TRW?
Coming into the conversation I had another job offer. However, the actual recruitment and approach TRW made good impression on me. Also important was the fact that the company quickly decided on me, in other words, that someone noticed me.
What do you remember from the period of the internship?
At the beginning I met with people who have spent many years here, had very extensive knowledge and experience, but also more traditional approach. As for the internship program, this injection of “fresh blood” in the form of graduates had to add some energy to the then team. What was positive is an idea, a good atmosphere and perspective. I think it is important to be in a place that is developing. I started as it was 200 people, at this moment we have 1300 and 1500. When we have company grows, many people who want to have an idea and energy, grow with it. If someone would have asked me what external factors contributed to the fact that I’m here, where I am, it would point to the fact that I was in a company that is developing.
Is the knowledge gained at university proved to be useful?
The knowledge gained at the university is obviously needed. I graduated from automation, but I also have diplomas of financial management and business management. On the other hand always I thought that this was the technical college gave me the profound knowledge and skills. Topics engineering, moreover, has always been in the circle of my interests. The thing that fascinates me at the moment is to work with people and the opportunity to contribute to their development – it gives me great satisfaction. I think a lot of things already learned here in the company, in the course of their daily work.
How rolled your career after internship? How did you come to the current position of Plant Manager? Not everyone is director of the factory, right? How was it in your case?
For sure it was that I always knew what I wanted do the next step. When I was an intern, I knew that I wanted to be an engineer. When I was an engineer, I knew that I wanted to be a director of engineering, and as I was the head of the engineers I knew that I wanted to be head of production. On the other hand, being head of production already knew I wanted to be the director of the factory. It was always clear to me what I want to do next and I tried to give as much of myself as possible. At each of these positions I was about three years. Now I’m the director of two factories and I think that if I manage to do it well. I want to continue because await us further steps, m.in .. factory expansion and development engineering center. It makes me feel that all the time I learn something new.
often stressed that it is important for you to let your employees maintained a balance between private life and professional life. As you are successful being on such a high position?
I think this is a matter of attitude. You have to know when to be effective – for example, I prefer to come to work earlier than stay after hours. In contrast, you want and need to learn how to properly organize their free time. For me, a springboard that allows me to keep balance is primarily family – wife and two children, but also karate that I train since childhood and recently motorcycle. I intend to work TRW passionate people who will be able to transfer it to do what they do every day.
What’s at work gives you the most satisfaction?
In fact, our goal is to create a secure, stable and based on respect workplace. I wish it were a company, to which people want to come, because there should be, because here you can learn, because here you can calmly look into the future. If this is so, it is according to me one of the greatest motivators.
The second is to work with people and feeling that at least some of them personally, I managed to somehow inspire and develop. This is the second such major positives.
What do you think, what most distinguishes TRW against other companies?
I have to admit that I have a poor comparison, because my careers are over 10 years is associated with one company. But I try to regularly meet with new employees who pass to us from other companies. They always inquire about what distinguishes TRW positively, but also where they see areas that can be improved.
This is what I think is characteristic for our company, the high growth rates and the variety of challenges. This requires a greater commitment, which for some may be a plus, and the other negative. We, however, are looking for just those people for whom this is something attractive.
Why is it TRW a good place to work for the young, educated people after graduation?
I think it’s all of those arguments I quoted, but maybe it’s a good opportunity to summarize them. TRW is a company that is growing rapidly all the time. You can try your hand at various roles. This is also a place where you can get involved, feel that he was doing something important and see this goal. For my career I’m very happy, because in the past 10 years my responsibilities increased significantly. Let this be the argument for the other, because it means that here you can develop. We always look first at people who already are with us, before we propose the development of someone from the outside. This principle applies all the time, and I can serve as one of its examples.
Thank you very much for your time.
