The excellent acting, the director’s unbridled imagination and classic literature. This connection needs to go. Paul Aigner reached for the work of Voltaire – “Candide, or Optimism” – and created in Bialystok Puppet Theatre spectacle truly daring.

After the premiere performance of “Candide, or Optimism”
Who has seen previous productions Aigner – “Texas Jim” or “Princess Angina” – knows what the artist can do. As it turned out, “Candide” is a great material for him. Rich in sarcasm, with fast narration and sudden twists. And when this director has made his own, original sketch, he created a theatrical masterpiece.
fast pace, humor and songs
The show is a big challenge for the actors. The team Bialystok Puppet Theatre is doing, however, the eighteenth-century philosophical tale and its stage adaptation brilliantly. With great pleasure to watch the Michael Jarmoszuk. In the role of Candide it is curious, but naive respectively. Sylwia Janowicz-Dobrowolska as Cunegonde is grotesque and selfish woman. The rest of the team also deserve applause – playing several roles is not an easy task.
The audience can not get bored, but rather every moment burst out laughing. It is not only the parody of acting, but also satirical songs, full of verbal games. It was written by Michael Wojtyszko, music was written by Jerzy Derfel (live game her team). There is no shortage even opera singing (a reference to neighboring BTL-I Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic?). Actors not enough, they sing, they can do it too – often complex – choreography (he puts together it Garbacik Carolina). An important role here too set design and costumes (the author Pavel Hubička also worked on “Texas Jim”). The whole has a fast pace – like a real movie adventure!
travel with the candidate
Banished from Westphalia for the affection of love to the daughter of Baron Cunegonde Candide wandering around the world and observes human misery. As is so inculcated to believe in him by Master Pangloss philosophy of optimism? Voltaire’s hero is the witness of the Seven Years War (stage drill rod and go through the whole regiment). When sent to the Netherlands, greets him Anabaptist … in a shirt with Bob Marley. Pangloss also meets infected with syphilis (genealogy goes back to the same disease Columbus), which tells the tragic fate of Cunegonde and her family. Total flow to Lisbon (the sound of waves and storm performed by Richard Dolińskiego later will also be an elephant sea). City earthquake struck – the effects of the disaster does not show the scenery, but the actors.
This is just the beginning of the adventure. Candide and Pangloss stand before the Holy Inquisition (the Grand Inquisitor is none other than Doliński). It is found also that Cunegonde is doing quite well. He went to a Jew, but the bed is divided between him and the Grand Inquisitor (as in the song “Love must be familiar with the concept of circulation”).
Already in Cadiz his story tells old, who says she is the daughter of Pope Urban X (it was not like that). There is also a eunuch, who sings of regret for the lost jewels. In Buenos Aires on Candide and Cunegonde awaits the governor with a mustache in a red robe (Doliński), who “loves women crazy” (Krzysztof Bitdorf as limping servant). On the other hand, in Paraguay Candide meets the Jesuits (among them the brother of Cunegonde), as well as cannibals. Finally it goes to the utopian land of Eldorado – the scene is deceptively close to Polish weddings and film Smarzowski (it illustrates acquiring a song about Polish emigration).
Optimism is the madness
After returning to Europe Candide goes straight to the Venetian carnival, during which play dethroned kings. Our hero is accompanied by the philosopher Martin, who doubted the philosophy of optimism. According to him, “optimism is the madness of proving that everything is good, when we going wrong.” And Candide begins to wonder about the current vision of the world.
The latest proposal BTL-in is over two hours delicious fun at the highest level adopted at a pre-show standing ovation. Paul Aigner is able to bring out the essence of the classics, without giving up the humor, stylistic volts and contemporary references. It is through such spectacles can believe that Voltaire’s “Candide” is still current.
