Review of the film “On the Border” – where you can not hear a scream – Portal PPE.PL

“On the Border” is the feature debut by Wojciech Kaspersky, who previously created documents only. The director decided to quite heavy genre – thriller, which in Polish cinema is not easy. Just to mention grotesque “We schedule the timing of darkness” from 2008 or even tacky “hot date” of 2012. However, Kasperskiemu manages to create a claustrophobic thriller. The action was set in the winter, dark scenery, and the tension is growing as it should be – with the development of history and do not know when everything explodes. The former border guard Matthew (Andrzej Chyra) and his two sons come to the Bieszczady Mountains to cut off from civilization, the mountain base to arrange their relations after a recent family tragedy. Their stay is interrupted by the appearance of a mysterious stranger (Marcin Dorociński), who hides a dark secret. To survive, the brothers will be forced to make up the difficult lessons of maturity.

As the title suggests it is a film about the border. Border human abilities and strength. Especially it refers to the two young heroes – Janka and Tom, who are in a fairly rapid pace must undergo transformation of the boys in men. For the Father they leave them alone with a pretty nasty guy who is suddenly appearing out of nowhere Konrad. But that’s not the only problem that the movie touches. We find it is also present on the refugees, who try every day to cross the border in search of shelter and a better tomorrow. The title frontier for many of them may prove to be a deadly trap.

the director also managed to collect a very interesting cast, whose completion, due to the relatively tight schedule of some of the actors, it took up to four years. The most interesting thing falls Marcin Dorociński whose performance can safely be compared to Jack Nicholson in “The Shining.” His Konrad is dark, but sometimes also very human, arousing the viewer ambivalent feelings. We do not know if it’s an ordinary stray tourist or perhaps someone else. His behavior raises great atmosphere of terror and not once will make podskoczymy in cinema chair. He is echoed by Andrzej Grabowski plays obese, not spilling the collar of the head of the border guards, who likes to talk about old times, but as the situation requires it and can reliably punch. Kaspersky, who is also the author of the script, written great dialogue discharging atmosphere of constant threat, shame lacked at this idea interesting ending.

The award also deserves two young actors playing sons Matthew – Bartosz Bleaching and Cuba Henriksen. In the game, the lack of falsehood and artificiality, which could disrupt the reception of the film and squander developed by older actors atmosphere of terror.

Unfortunately, what goes for the four mentioned, fails at Andrew Chyra. His character is as if lost and is best used in scenes in which consume vodka. The rest is not very convincing. You can see that Chyra not find themselves in this climate thriller and is trying to catch up dialogue on an existential level, uttering such questions such as: “What is going on in the world, it’s us no one will find” or “Time to separate the men from the boys.”

“On the border” is in many respects unique film production. All images were created in the Bieszczady Mountains, in one object – mountain campsite border guards. For such solutions, the filmmakers decide to extremely rare for several reasons. Usually prefer to shoot in warm and rich with all the comforts of civilization halls films. It is also much cheaper solution than pulling all the equipment in the winter for some wilderness, where there is not even a telephone signal, and lorries with the equipment are often stuck in the mud. By exquisite images is nominated last year for an Oscar for cinematography for “Ides” operator Luke Zala. What is interesting is again the “hateful eight”, “appears” and “Time trials” a film set in the winter scenery. You can see this is now in vogue.

Distributor to attract more viewers to the cinema He has committed, quite unnecessarily, fraud, checking in advertising materials that the film “is a story inspired by true events.” The director, however, denied this information at a press conference during one of the festivals, admitting that it is entirely fiction.

We already have a decent historical cinema, dramatic, and recently even seen some glimpses when it comes to comedy. Well, they finally lived to a cool thriller. I hope not the last.
