Archaeologists conducting research at the former Nazi death camp in Sobibor discovered the remains of the building, which housed the gas chambers. “This discovery is of historical significance as the Germans tried to erase all traces of the crime committed, and it turns out that there is a material trace of their deeds” – said a spokeswoman for the State Museum at Majdanek Agnieszka Kowalczyk.
Archaeologists have found numerous fragments of the foundation building the crematorium, which was by the Germans blown up during the liquidation of the camp in 1943. They were previously under the paved surface on which the monument was set. The monument was dismantled and removed asphalt in connection with the planned new development of the area of the former camp.
The monument was set in 1965 years the place where, according to previous hypotheses could be the crematorium. This is confirmed, we found fragments of brick foundations. Clearly visible are the remains of the four target crematorium measuring 4 to 5 meters from the east and probably the same four goals were on the west side, but it still will explore. Probably we have also discovered the place where the engine was set Tanks Giving. Coming from the exhaust gases were murdered people – said the leader of the study archaeologist Wojciech Mazurek.
From the findings of historians, especially Robert Kuwałek, it follows that the gas chambers at Sobibor decorated in a brick building, whose real purpose was hiding signboard with the inscription “Baderaum” (bath) and suspended from the ceiling showerhead. In the second phase of the camp building housed six or eight chambers. They installed a system of pipes connected to the engine producing exhaust gases, which imported murdered Jews to Sobibor.
Within 20-30 minutes in chambers once murdered around 500 people. Body narrow-gauge railway carriages transported to huge pits and buried there. At the end of 1942, was built with rails Field crematorium where corpses were burned at the stake gassed victims.
extermination camp Sobibor survived, none of the prisoners were forced to operate the gas chambers and burning the bodies of the murdered. They were hermetically isolated from the other prisoners.
extermination camp “SS – Sonderkommando Sobibor” was founded in 1942 as part of “Operation Reinhardt”, whose aim was the annihilation of the Jewish population. In its place was chosen area located among swamps and forests, near the railway line Włodawa-Chelm, approx. 4 km from the village of Sobibor. The total number of victims of the concentration camp is not known. It is estimated that since March 1942. Until October 1943. Germans murdered at least 250 thousand.
