100 books that must be read. Internet users have chosen – rmf24.pl

165,000 votes were cast in the poll organized by Empik – “100 books that must be read”. The aim is to provoke a broad discussion about the readership.

From the http://www.empik.com/100ksiazek have two lists – a list created by the Internet and a list created by writers and journalists.

The poll started from the jury, which was attended by journalists and writers. Sylwia Chutnik, Anna Dziewit-Meller, Margaret Halber, Karolina Korwin-Piotrowska, Catherine Montgomery, Catherine Tubylewicz, Żakowska Magdalena, Piotr Bratkowski, Mariusz Cieślik, Remigiusz Grzela, Michal Rusinek Janusz Leon Wisniewski and Jakub Żulczyk – each of the judges suggested ten most important for yourself books. During the meeting of these proposals emerged from the final hundred.

In the list of 100 books recommended by the members of the jury included both items from the recent Polish and world literature and classics, children’s books, as well as a philosophical treatise recommended by Margaret Halber whether the item popular science, which is recommended by Janusz Leon Wisniewski. In the ranking we find next to each other by such authors as Samuel Beckett, Zadie Smith, Virginia Woolf, Myśliwski, Witold Gombrowicz, Krzysztof Kąkolewski the author of “Winnie the Pooh” AA Milne.

July 15 took the initiative to readers who for two weeks a distance of more than 165,000 votes! Internet users could vote for many books, but the title only once. By the way, the vote could take part in a quiz knowledge of literature, which joined nearly 5,000 people.

Ranking of Internet opens the Harry Potter series, which was given almost 10.5 thousand votes. Books for children and young people constitute as much as 25% of the ranking. These include both classics such as “The Little Prince”, “Anne of Green Gables”, “Stones for the Rampart” or “Tales” Andersen and contemporary, including “The Hunger Games” or “Stars of our wines.”

Most of them, as many as 39 positions in the rankings, is prose. In this category, the largest number of votes was put on “Master and Margarita” – a novel most frequently indicated also by the Jury. Among the items included such classic titles as “Crime and Punishment”, “Animal Farm,” “One Hundred Years of Solitude” or “doll”. Modern novels are represented by titles such as “Shadow of the Wind”, “Source” and “Loneliness in the network”.

The strengths categories have also proved literature of manners (14 titles), fantasy (12 titles), as well crime and sensation (10 titles). The list includes also representing non-fiction, poetry, drama, and popular-science book.

In the final hundred there were a few surprises. These books their place in the ranking is due to a very strong mobilization from fans motivate themselves via social media to vote on the items. However, more than 90% of the units defended itself. Everything indicates that we are dealing with the largest plebiscite in Poland, although of course you have to remember that the results are not representative of the general public. The vote was attended by mainly young people up to 34 years of age – says Magdalena Mularuk – Director of Marketing at Empik.

165 000 votes cast and 80 thousand people participating in the campaign shows us that literature is still living subject. It is good that the list of jurors and the Internet so different from each other, and these differences arouse emotions and provoke discussions. The more people would look to the “100 books that must be read,” the better. I hope that many will inspire these combinations in their reading choices and reach for the titles of one or the other list – adds Michael Tomaniak, Head Books in Empik.
