What is the way of a good historical novel ? What magic is in writing these novels? And how interesting to present the story of John Sobieski and Marysieński? All this and not only talked with Robert outriders, the author of the novel “The Queen’s Gambit.”

Robert Foryś was born in 1973 in Warsaw. Trained as an archaeologist, a historian by avocation. During his studies he took up the demonology of Slavs and Balts and the pagan rites of magic. He likes challenges, women and literature (in any order). Author of the novel “The Queen’s Gambit.” Thomas Leszkowicz: Where did the idea for a novel of the seventeenth century, in which there is more conspiracies and less hussars?

Robert Foryś: I admire the way in which the Anglo-Saxons and the French can translate into contemporary audience the history of their countries. Even the Germans well it comes out. And with us still walimy head against the wall between tradition follow Kraszewski and Sienkiewicz, and the result is that the historical novel in Poland, written by native authors, is a niche phenomenon. It lacks the savvy fashion, a positive trend, particularly among the broad masses of young people, and from this all begins. In a world glut of information manufacturing trend it is sometimes more important than the story itself. That’s what I’m doing, forges fashion, even though this process does not have to end up being successful, because you have to find something more than just the work of writers.

It’s not the first time Mr. novel set in historical reality. Why as a creator of fiction, are you guided precisely in the direction of history?

I love historical novels. I love to move to distant times, take part in adventures, competitions and events, I would never be put in normal life. This magical, when for a few hours a day you become a Viking plądrującym Europe, Roman legionnaire departing to conquer Britain, or a soldier fighting under the command of Sobieski. Mr. open history book wczuwają the role of courtiers, queens or women of low birth, experiencing intrigue, elation and downs of your favorite characters. Today no man able with sword in hand in the wall of shields, no woman in Poland does not have to flee before being accused of witchcraft and torture, or get married at age 13, because it had agreed to the parents of a widowed old man, who is seeking a third wives. Historical novel is an exciting illusion that we experience while sitting in a comfortable chair with a cup of coffee or tea. Entertainment for intelligent people with a rich imagination.

How many in your novel, the real historical facts, how the literary fiction?

Maria Kazimiera d’Arquien (mal. Jan Tricius) I try to stick to the facts but the story is the most important story, emotions and twists. The novel should not resemble the visit with a trip to a school in a boring museum.

Marysieńka in Poland is regarded as a good and loving wife, good king. You presented it in a different light. Not afraid Mr. allegations of contaminating history?

In the same way some say that in Poland, almost every pre-war anti-Semite helped Jews during the occupation, and how not to help himself to help his family. This paradox and internal transformation. I mean occupation purifies the heart and elevates characters. I do not fear charges of contaminating history, Queen’s Gambit was written for people at a level characterized by knowledge, distance to each other and sense. The others do not interest me. But of course there are always people who does not fit in my head that someone has their own opinion, that the world is not black and white.

Is Jan Sobieski conspiring against the rulers in collaboration with a foreign state was a traitor?

The question today and the current political. Is the opposition plotting against the West chosen in elections authority betrays the country says the words power, or, saves Poles from the wrong choice, which made the ballot (in the opinion of that opposition). Three hundred and fifty years ago, also he asked himself this question, which only proves that between Poles little has changed for the better. The very notion of betrayal is difficult to definition. It depends on the context of the times in which they are made and, of course, on whether the traitor lose or win. Jan Sobieski was a product of his time. Ambitious, haughty and proud, and the fabulously wealthy. Such a mixture can turn to anyone in the head. Slide the question: why and I can not be Caesar?

Jan III Sobieski family (mal. Henri Gascar)

the period of the rule of Michael Korybut Wiśniowiecki and John Sobieski enjoyed the interest of artists, not only Sienkiewicz, but even Korkozowicza Kazimierz (the series’ latest winner “), not to mention the TV series” Black clouds “. What’s new lover of stories about this era will find in your book?

The Queen’s Gambit, each character has its own story, often difficult, because this was, and human life. Full fears about what the next day will bring. Health and prosperity, and on the contrary illness, betrayal persons nearest to us, bad faith and ingratitude of others. I do not judge and do not condemn heroes, not instruct the reader. Offers him a choice, he wants to be loved or disliked a particular character, accepted or rejected performed in the novel choices and motivations behind them. I avoid simple ratings and bogoojczyźnianej narrative. I am sometimes politically incorrect and cynical, I do not avoid the irony and sex. It offers a large handful of romance and a pinch of magic. Often refers to contemporary experience, I am looking for analogues about who we are and why we Poles are so rarely anything we succeed. And as already manage, which is usually wasting. I try to seduce the reader does not usually manifested a desire to reach for a historical novel. Initiate something new and good. And what you wish.
