Pavel Landovský – Czech actor, playwright and dissident during the communist rule, died on Friday at age 78 of a heart attack – Czech media reported. He was a close friend of former President Vaclav Havel.
Born on September 11, 1936 . Landovský gained fame in the 60s, when during the political thaw in the country began to appear in films Czechoslovak New Wave.
He played, among others, in the film “Closely Watched Trains” that in 1968. won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Landovský was one of the initiators of the Charter 77, the most important document of the opposition. After signing this manifesto in defense of human rights actor was considered an undesirable and forced to leave the country. He went to Austria; where he played on the stage of the Burgtheater in Vienna.
Following the Velvet Revolution of 1989. Landovský returned to Prague in January 1990. Portrayed, among others, One of the main roles in the play “Audience”, written a few years earlier by his friend Havel.
